Degree Specifications
BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE A Bachelor of Arts degree (“BA”) is a degree comprising at least 40 credits of core units, at least 32 credits of discipline-specific classes, and at least 48 other credits. The BA degree must be at least 120 credits should not surpass 130 credits by many credits, if any. (For important information that specifies the nature of the core units, please see the "Core Units Specifications" tab above. For definitions of these units, please see the "Terms" section of the application manual.) A discipline-specific class is a class that awards students credit upon their successful apprehension, retention, and mastery of skills and concepts deemed necessary to the mastery of a specific subject or discipline within a field of learning. Discipline-specific classes are the necessary components of a major or minor. A major area of study, or a “major”, is any collection of learning units that are (1) connected to each other by a common academic subject, and (2) total at least 32 credits. A minor area of study, or a “minor”, is any collection of learning units that (1) are connected to each other by a common academic subject, and (2) total at least 20 credits. A "concentration" is any collection of learning units that (1) are connected to each other by a common academic subject, and (2) total at least 15 credits. Along with other formats of coursework for a BA, a faculty college must offer at least 1/2 of its credits via non-mediated, face-to-face classes. While it is recommended that these land credits be core learning units or degree-specific units, they do not have to be so. The total cost of a BA degree cannot exceed $15,000. MASTER OF ARTS DEGREE A Master of Arts degree (“MA”) is a degree comprising a master thesis and at least 35 credits of master-level, discipline-specific classes beyond the Bachelor of Arts degree. An MA degree should not surpass 40 credits by much, if at all. A master thesis is an argument written as a developed draft of a potentially professionally publishable version. The minimum length of a master thesis is 50 double-spaced pages, not including bibliographies (12,500 words). The master thesis is written by an MA candidate under the direction of a mentor and is part of the final requirements of an MA degree. Along with other formats of coursework for an MA, a faculty college must offer at least 1/2 of its credits through non-mediated, face-to-face classes. The recommended cost of an MA degree is $4,000, and the absolute maximum cost is $6,000.
DOCTORATE OF PHILOSOPHY DEGREE A Doctorate of Philosophy degree (“PhD”) is one of two types: (1) a degree comprising a master thesis and at least 40 credits of graduate-level discipline-specific classes beyond the Master of Arts degree, or (2) a degree comprising of at least 75 credits of graduate-level discipline-specific classes beyond the BA degree . A doctoral dissertation is an academic argument written as a developed draft of a potentially professionally publishable version. The minimum length of a doctoral dissertation is 150 double-spaced pages, not including bibliographies (37,500 words). The doctoral dissertation is written by an PhD candidate under the direction of a mentor and is part of the final requirements of an PhD degree. Along with other formats of coursework for an PhD, a faculty college must offer at least 1/2 of its credits through non-mediated, face-to-face classes. The recommended cost of an PhD degree is $5,000, and the absolute maximum cost is $8,000 beyond the MA level.
